The Truth About Ceramic Coatings in Sydney

We've turned down more customers than I can count — not because we couldn't do the job, but because they walked in expecting something a ceramic coating was never going to do.

One that sticks with me: we went out to inspect a customer's GWM Tank. He was filthy on the previous installers, convinced they'd ripped him off because his car had scratches and "the coating didn't work."

The thing is, the coating did work. It did exactly what it was meant to do. He just had no idea what that actually was.

After enough of these, it became painfully clear — most people getting a ceramic coating in Sydney don't really know what they're paying for. So I'm here to explain to you if ceramic coating is worth it?

The Basics

First, what a ceramic coating actually is

A ceramic coating is a silicon dioxide–based liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your paint, creating a durable protective layer.

It shields against UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, acid rain, and chemical stains while delivering a high-gloss, hydrophobic finish that's far easier to maintain. And unlike wax or sealant, it lasts years, not weeks.

Now notice what's not on that list.

01Truth

It won't stop rock chips or scratches

If you're picturing yourself flying down the M4 thinking your coated car is bulletproof — it isn't. A ceramic coating is a chemical and UV barrier, not body armour. Stone chips, scratches, and the general punishment of Sydney roads will still get through.

What you're after there is PPF (paint protection film). The reason most people avoid it is the price — PPF typically runs 4 to 5 times the cost of a ceramic coating, often around the $8k mark for a full job.

Not cheap. But if rock-chip protection is genuinely what you want, that's the product. Paying for a coating and expecting it to do PPF's job is pointless.

02Truth

The job isn't finished when we hand the keys back

A coating isn't "set and forget." If you want it to last the years it's capable of, the car needs a proper wash at least once a month, plus a light clay bar treatment about once a year.

Personal story. When I first started coating cars, I did my mum's BMW. It came out genuinely beautiful — one of the ones I was proud of. Months later I had a look at it...

She still hadn't washed it. Not once.

Here's why that matters: skip the maintenance and you lose the hydrophobic effect. Water that used to bead up and roll straight off instead clings, sits on the paint, and dries into streaks and spots. The coating's still there — it just can't do its job buried under grime.

03Truth

Getting just your paint coated is only half the job

Most coating jobs stop at the painted panels — and that's arguably the part of your car under the least daily stress. Your wheels cop brake dust and road heat.

Your glass takes every bit of rain, sap and bug splatter. Your interior deals with sun, spills and wear. Leave all of that bare and you've protected the easy bit while the hard-working surfaces fade and stain.

The good news is the market's shifting. More detailers now offer a ceramic coating package for the entire car—interior, wheels, glass, and exterior—so you cover everything in a single visit instead of paying for each part separately later on.

04Truth

That shiny new car from the dealership isn't as clean as it looks

This one's a bit cheeky. When you collect a new car, a lot of dealerships hand it over in poor lighting — and that's not always an accident. It conveniently hides the paint's real condition before you drive off.

Between the way they wash it and the prep they do beforehand, most new cars already have swirl marks in the paint by the time you get the keys. Some people honestly never notice. But the darker your car, the more those swirls jump out at you — and once you see them, you can't unsee them.
